• If they do work, the speed at which they clear a drain can be alarming, as in the case of a friend I mentioned earlier whose repairs to a wall later revealed that half a drain line had been completely eaten away.
Plumbers cite another significant factor: the negative environmental impact of chemical drain cleaners. These products often contain harsh compounds that can eventually enter our waterways and soil and cause harm to aquatic life and ecosystems. Environmentally conscious plumbers advocate for more sustainable and less harmful alternatives, like baking soda and vinegar (naturally displacing elements of the drain while mildly irritating the nose) or enzymatic drain cleaners. Enzymatic cleaners break down organic matter. They do it without introducing toxic substances into our homes or lives. Green living goes hand in hand with green plumbing.
Safety concerns also play a decisive role in why plumbers advise against the use of Drano. The powerful chemicals in these products can present serious health threats if they are inhaled or if they come into contact with the skin or eyes. For homes with children or pets, the risk is compounded, as even slight accidental exposure can lead to major health emergencies. And mixing chemical cleaners with other products can—and often does—result in deadly reactions, including explosive ones that release toxic fumes. All of this makes safety the key issue when choosing whether to use a chemical drain cleaner.
